In the wake of recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, local makerspace LOLspace has been searching anew for ways to address anti-black racism, police violence, and other injustices within our own communities and at large.  We are excited to announce our upcoming wiki edit-a-thon to encourage people to explore and document their neighborhoods and share resources.

On Saturday, October 25, our neighborhood is hosting a block party celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Black & Chicano arts movements. For more info, check out the Eastside Arts Alliance website and Facebook page.
During the block party we are hosting an edit-a-thon on Oakland’s very own local wiki. Folks are invited to come down, learn more about wikis and editing, and even get involved in adding or editing information about their neighborhoods, stories, and concerns.
Feel free to come as you are, but if you’d like you can bring a laptop, and you can save time by setting up an account on Oakland Wiki in advance.
Here are some ideas we have been kicking around; but you are welcome to work on anything that interests you!

Week of May 6, 2013: Hacking, Meditation, Yoga, and Gener-Asian Gap gallery!

As usual, we kick off the week w/ Hack Night at 7p. The Radical F*n Sangha sits on Tuesday, starting at 7. Yoga w/ Lady Idos goes from 6:30p to 8p on Wed. And we close out the week with Priscilla Hoang’s Gener-Asian Gap Gallery:

The Gener-Asian Gap is a gallery exhibition featuring a rich mix of local, multi-generational artist depicting their experiences with the generation gap within their families.

Both sides of the story will be told — one by the youth of Oakland, and one by parents and older folks. The pieces collectively share our struggles, successes, and how the generation gap affects us.

Snakes, Lions, Makers, and Hot Pots!

Please join us for our Anniversary/New Year’s party! Link is to Facebook, but the whole text of the invite is here:

Please join us on Sunday to welcome in the Year of the Snake! We are starting the festivities at 3 PM.

It’s our anniversary, and we want to celebrate together with you our community of makers and activists. We’ll remember great events from our first year and tell you about our news for 2013. Join our teachers, volunteers, board members and community members for an evening of fun and food. There is a rumor that Comrade Lover will make an appearance or two. We may even teach you to lion dance before the event is over.

What is Hatha Flow Yoga? Traditional hatha yoga is a holistic yogic path, including disciplines, postures (asana), purification procedures, breathing (pranayama), and meditation. It is also recognized as a stress-reducing practice. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical postures or “asanas”, purification practices, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance and strength and are practiced to improve the body’s physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation.

FLOW ( Vinyasa) Vinyasa, meaning ‘breath synchronized movement’ is a series of poses that you move through on either an exhale or an inhale.
